GET TO KNOW ISLAND ORGANICS

When we first discovered Island Organics it was like someone  read our minds. Coming from a Caribbean background ourselves, you know we instantly fell in love! Seeing cultural staples like Sorrel and Zaboca ( aka. avocado) transformed into products, joined two of our greatest loves, heritage and self-care. So of course, we had to meet the maker Leah Mason to chat about her inspirations and catch a few 'yardie' life hacks, too!

Why did you decide to start the brand?

I only wanted to use products on my skin that were 100% natural and was underwhelmed by mainstream beauty products so I decided to create my own.

What is your brand's overarching goal/mission?

Creating skincare products that people love and really enjoy is super important. Pairing my Caribbean culture with that, is something I’m fortunate to be able to do because many strong skincare ingredients are native to the Caribbean.

What is a product from your range that you use every day?

I use them all. The Whipped Golden Cocoa Butter is my go-to moisturiser, then there’s Zaboca; I wash my hands often so I’m loading up on hand cream many times in the day. I spritz my face with the Hibiscus ‘Sorrel’ Facial Mist after I shower, before I moisturise and I use the facial oil at night.

A special (insider) tip or piece of advice about any particular product in your range?

The Whipped Golden Cocoa Butter is made from a blend of butters and oils so I’d advise storing it in a cool place.

What does luxury mean to you?

It means thoughtfully curated ingredients, high performing products, someone being able to indulge in something, the full experience.

Does your heritage influence any of your lifestyle practices?

It certainly influences how I live. I lived in the Caribbean for a short time as a child, and was used to eating fresh fruit, food, fish just caught, etc, for example just picking and eating mangoes from the yard. Now living in England, I truly appreciate all things natural.

What is your favourite Yard + Parish piece?

I’m loving the look of the smudge sticks from Talou, the toothbrush holders by Toothbuckle and the cards by Bonita Ivie. The ‘You’re the Ackee to my Saltfish’ greeting card is so me.
